People of Perley - Ashley Innes

A one-day introduction to Perley Health unlocked a range of opportunities and social engagements for Ashley Innes. Ashley's journey with Perley Health began as a Grade-9 student during Take Our Kids to Work Day. Accompanied by her sister, Katharine, Ashley was introduced to the community that would become a prominent fixture in her life. Inspired by her initial experience, she joined the volunteer program and soon engaged with a private job coach to support the transition. Since then, Ashley has touched countless lives through her many contributions.

Over the years, Ashley has supported various programs, including Thursday Bingo, portering residents to Wednesday ice cream parlour, and lending a hand during Sunday Mass. Ashley took a brief hiatus when the pandemic struck but soon returned, adapting quickly to a world of masks; she could see beyond them and connect with others. “I want to make everybody happy and smile. Sometimes they have masks on, but I can see the smiles through their eyes.”

During the pandemic, Ashley also supported the Swab Clinic and delivered the Centre of Excellence newsletter and Community Report to the tenants in the Senior Living independent apartments.

Beyond her regular volunteer work, Ashley has been an enthusiastic participant in Team Perley Health during several Tamarack Race Weekends. Her commitment and contributions have earned her recognition, including an Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2023 and a Certificate of Excellence from Karen McCrimmon, MPP for Kanata-Carleton.

Currently, Ashley is part of a three-member volunteer team working on a major project to digitize Perley Health's extensive photo collection. In 2024, she proudly received her five-year pin, a milestone in her volunteer journey.

Ashley's volunteer work at Perley Health has opened doors for her personal and professional growth as well. She worked as a Hospital Support Aide at an Ottawa hospital where she gained valuable experience – and confidence - in patient engagement and administrative tasks. Though the program funding ended, Ashley transitioned into her current role as an administrative assistant at West Physio in Carp, where she works two mornings a week.

With her kindness, resilience, and passion for helping others, Ashley lives the spirit of community and service.
