Quilt of Valour: Jocelyn Niven's Lifelong Commitment to Veterans
Jocelyn Niven, Veteran and dedicated Perley Health volunteer, pours her heart into the many roles she takes on. Her commitment to uplifting those around her is evident in every moment she spends with residents and other Veterans. Jocelyn's passion for serving her community has long extended beyond the walls of Perley Health, and this spring that dedication was recognized with an esteemed award; receiving her own Quilt of Valour.
Born into a military family, Jocelyn served from 1972-2013. During her career, she worked in a support trade with the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This extensive military background provided a natural segue for her volunteer journey at Perley Health. Beginning with helping out during Wednesday morning painting class, Jocelyn has spent the last 15 months making those around her smile. She helps with the gardening program, assists with the Veterans Breakfast Club on Thursday mornings, contributes to the Sunday pub afternoons, and runs the painting studio activities.
Jocelyn's daughter, Crystal, nominated her for a Quilt of Valour as a way of acknowledging her service and saying thank you. Quilts of Valour Canada recognizes Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces for their service and commitment to our country through the presentation of quilts. The quilts are made by volunteers from across the country. Jocelyn's quilt was presented at Perley Health by Andrea Fabricius, Instructor, Creative Arts, in the studio, making it quite a fitting tribute.
“I thought I was a trailblazer when I joined the military in 1972. But now I have met the real trailblazers and I am humbled by them,” said Jocelyn. “Nothing makes me happier than a day with my Veterans at Perley Health.”
Jocelyn encourages all those who can to consider volunteering, especially veterans.
“Perley Health offers a fantastic environment with flexible programs and activities,” says Jocelyn. “I believe once they start volunteering, they won't want to leave.”
Congratulations on receiving this honour, Jocelyn, and thank you for all that you do!
